I do believe in faeries (part i)

For one of my classes this year, I've begun a new series. At the moment - for lack of anything better, and because I'm fond of Peter Pan - I'm calling it my "I do believe in faeries" project. I've always adored myths, fables, and legends, and most especially faerie tales. When I was little, I was always pretending to be a dryad, or an elf, or some kind of elemental creature thing. I don't know why, but it just captured my imagination.

...What am I talking about? It still does! Hence, for a long while now, I've been wanting to do an elaborate, almost glamour style series illustrating different "types" of faeries that I've come to love so much. However, with actual work and school to balance, I've never been able to justify the time it would take to put something like that together just for the fun of it.

However, as luck would have it, one of my classes this semester is entirely based on completing an elaborate concept series. And when I proposed my idea to the professor, she gave me the go ahead! Now I can dress up my lovely friends as faeries and take pictures of them, all in the name of education! Um, yes please.

So, a few weeks into class, I had my first shoot of the series. The absolutely stunning women who modeled for me are Dorissa Filopoulos and Kelly Kyle, and not only did they blow my mind with how perfect they were for their characters, it was so much fun spending the afternoon working with them!

This is Kelly. She was the first to be "done up". She was playing the part of a Dryad - if don't know what that is, google it. They're cool.

Yes, apparently I build ivy crowns with my pinky out. I'm very prim that way. I decided to wear one myself all day, to "get into the spirit of the shoot". Really, I just still like to pretend I'm a faery, too. :)

At some point the morning of the shoot, I had the great idea of attaching some fake leaves to the dress that Kelly would be wearing, in an attempt to make it look like she was wearing a dress of leaves. Very dryad-like, right? However, the problem was, the dress we were using didn't belong to me, so hot-gluing was out... and I didn't have time to go out and get a new dress. However, once I get an idea in my head, I have a tendency to refuse to let it go until I accomplish it (not always the best trait, but oh well). So I sat on my bed and worked at it and fumbled with Kelly's dress until I got this:

Yup, that's packing tape. Unable to fix the leaves to the whole of the dress, I settled for enough to give me some closeups. So I hot-glued the leaves to each other, hot-glued the tape to the leaves (because for some weird reason the tape wouldn't stick to them) and taped the leaves to the dress! I know, pretty ghetto, but hey. It worked!

After that, we got Dorissa made up like a Naiad. I originally titled her a water nymph, because I thought people would get that easier, but it was a bit lengthy for what I wanted.. then I toyed with "Siren" for a while, before eventually settling on Naiad. They're basically water nymphs. You can google them. :)

She had the coolest lashes on. Speaking of makeup, allow me to give credit where credit is due here! All the makeup for the day was done by the talented Ashley Williams. You can find her fan page here: http://on.fb.me/rmFgHF She's fabulous!

After everyone was all costumed and made up, we headed out to the pool to do Dorissa's shoot. :)

But of course, we can't always be so serious, and that gives us some fun photos too. :)

Next, we moved on to Kelly's shoot. We drove into Abita to a little wooded area there to do most of it, and then came back to my place to shoot the rest.

Meet....

And that's all for now, folks! I can't wait to work on my next installment. :) Thanks for reading, and for all of your support!
